Immediacy, Network, and Support Drive Fiber Internet Service Provider Selection

As residential property investors and operators sort through an array of internet technology options, new considerations are playing a role in the eventual provider selection.

Technology and internet solutions have long been a key consideration in residential property developments. To decipher the options, property owners and managers look for providers that can deliver speed, reliability and customer service – all at an affordable cost.

According to Ryan Wiehrdt, SVP of sales and operations for telecom consulting firm Broadband Real Estate Advisors (BREA), several additional factors can drive a decision, including premium resident services, industry expertise, and a proven track record with installations.

Prioritizing services for today’s resident - and making it instant
As developers and firms wade through fiber providers, Wiehrdt says their focus should be centered around services that provide convenience, enhance safety and security, and improve the overall living experience for residents. However, instantaneous access to service on day one has emerged as a top demand.

He says property managers are have moved far beyond the era of putting an internet service flyer in a move-in kit, or residents having to schedule service installations. The new normal is a homeowner or renter activating internet service in real time before “moving a single box off the truck.”

“It’s a ‘Field of Dreams’ business model, meaning that if you pre-deploy facilities and equipment and make it relevant and intuitive, residents will likely choose that service platform or technology immediately,” says Wiehrdt.

Mitigating fiber installation costs
Fiber installation cost doesn’t need to be as daunting as it once was for property developers. Wiehrdt says that clients can create a managed process to forecast project costs that also allows for planning.

“Giving fiber providers sufficient time to complete due diligence and commit to a deployment of services is important,” he says. Additionally, providers such as Quantum Fiber work closely with property owners to minimize and even eliminate upfront costs.

“The effort of joint trenching typically helps achieve a lot of cost savings, as well as optimizing design and construction to help take out unknown variables,” Wiehrdt notes.

Finding the right technology partner
Wiehrdt works directly with builders and developers to best connect with partners such as Quantum Fiber, which boasts a network architecture that reduces latency and delivers symmetrical upload and download speeds, but is also more resilient to disasters, and commercial power outages.

“Quantum Fiber has a history of successful fiber optic deployments in multifamily and single family,” he says. ”And they also understand the unique challenges that real estate developers and builders encounter.”

He says it’s imperative for his clients to have confidence in a technology partner’s ability to deliver on commitments, while also offering strong sales and support teams. Wiehrdt says they are looking for providers that have comprehensive service offerings and are suited to address the total environment, and be able to scale services.

“In the foreseeable future, the evolution of technology and customer demands will only continue to grow.”
